Die Betrachtung der Veränderung: Hartmut Neumann

  • Artists:
    Hartmut Neumann
  • Date:
    16.2.2017 to 31.5.2018
  • Venue:

The artist Hartmut Neumann (*1954) who lives in Cologne is known mainly for his painting. In the sum of its many details, his figurations unfold into a comprehensive, almost abstract (image) ornamentation that becomes a new object. He is interested in the fantastic and breathes life into bizarre creatures. In addition, he plays with words, which he uses very humorously and skillfully in his titles.

Hartmut Neumann has been a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig since 1992. A short time later he began to deal with photography in relation to his painting and drawing oeuvre. Thus, his photographic works are not concerned with depicting familiar reality, but with the invention of another reality. Similar to painting. He becomes aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each medium: the slowness of painting is juxtaposed with the speed of photography. Thus, the experience in painting allows a different approach to photography – in undecided phases, the other medium helps to overcome helplessness.

In his often luminous, colorful works he generally reflects on the representability of things. Since the 2000s, classic-looking black-and-white works that exemplify nothing less than space have been integrated into the picture. To locate the different series and series in the artistic oeuvre will be the claim of the first retrospective exhibition of the photographs.

The exhibition is accompanied by an accompanying book with a basic text by Professor Klaus Honnef, Bonn. Text in German and English.
