Duesseldorf Photo Conference: Photography (No_On) Photography

The international conference PHOTOGRAPHY (NO_ON) PHOTOGRAPHY, among others with Alec Soth (USA), Prof. Dr. Peter Osborne (Kingston University, London), Prof. Dr. Astrid Mania (HfbK Hamburg), Dr. Claus Gunti (University of Lausanne), Johnny Milano (USA), Ramon Amaro (Goldsmith College, London/Het nieuwe Instituut, Rotterdam), Sadie Murdoch (Goldsmith College, London), Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, Prof. Mareike Foecking (University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf/PBSA), will use fragmentary interlocking positions to thematize a first description of the state of the photographic in the present day, which is to be understood as the beginning of a further discourse.

It is not intended to make a final statement, but rather to open up a space on the basis of the different positions and contributions, a “picture detail”, in the context of which current discussions are shown, but on the basis of which it is also very clear how much there is still around this detail, similar to what a photograph does or can do itself.

The question of whether photography is or can be art has long since become obsolete, and more interesting questions arise, for example about contextualization and conceptualization. Approaches to the present of the photographic take place, for example, on the question of the use of archives, the speculative, the documentary as a contemporary document of past self images, the photographic as an image in relation to other images, the photographic as a performative act, images that are no longer seen by people or images as socially active actors.
